Building a Retail-Ready Private Label Oral Care Line: SKUs, MOQ and Margin Math

A focused private label oral care line can out-earn national brands on margin while building customer loyalty — if you choose SKUs and quantities with discipline. Here is the playbook we share with retail and dental-chain partners.

Step 1: Pick 4–6 SKUs, Not 20

The winning starter assortment for most chains:

  • Adult soft toothbrush — the traffic anchor, highest repeat rate
  • Kids toothbrush — brings the family into your brand
  • Interdental brushes or floss picks — high-margin consumable
  • Orthodontic kit (V-cut brush + wax + mini floss) — near-zero competition on shelf
  • Water flosser — premium halo product that lifts perceived brand quality

Step 2: Understand MOQ Economics

With MOQ from 1,080 pcs per SKU, a five-SKU launch needs roughly 5,400 units total. At typical factory price ranges, your initial stock investment stays in the low five figures (USD) — small enough to test, large enough to look professional on shelf. Prefer suppliers who mix handle colors within one SKU order; variety sells without multiplying MOQs.

Step 3: The Margin Math

Work backwards from your retail price:

  1. Target retail price (e.g., $4.90 for a premium soft brush)
  2. Retailer/channel margin: typically 40–50%
  3. Your target gross margin: 55–65% on landed cost
  4. Landed cost = factory price + freight + duty + clearing

If the math gives you a landed cost ceiling of $0.80, take that number to the factory with your specification — a capable manufacturer will engineer the product to hit it, adjusting bristle spec and packaging before sacrificing quality.

Step 4: Packaging That Sells in 3 Seconds

  • State the benefit, not the feature: "Extra-soft for sensitive gums" beats "0.15mm bristles"
  • Multilingual packaging if you sell across regions — confirm with your factory during artwork
  • Hang-hole blister cards for pegged retail; boxes for gift-style premium SKUs

Step 5: Launch, Measure, Expand

Track sell-through weekly for 8 weeks. The SKU above 60% sell-through becomes your reorder anchor; the one below 30% gets replaced. Your second order is where private label truly pays — reorder cycles of 25–35 days keep shelves stocked and cash flowing.
